QGCS 2021 Elections_ Call for Nomination

QGCS Election 21/22

Update 2021-05-07

Hi everyone,

We hope you are all doing well.

We want to thank everyone that submitted nominations to the 2021/2022 QGCS Executive. We also want to congratulate all the individuals that got nominated! This year, two of the positions, VP Finance and 4th-floor representative received more than 1 nomination. As a result, we asked the candidates to provide us with a brief paragraph about themselves. Unfortunately, we didn't receive a nomination for VP External Affairs, so if you would like to be considered for that position, please let us know.

In addition, we are also making a modification in the Constitution to add to the QGCS an EDII Liason position which will be directly linked to the Queen's Chemistry Inclusivity Diversity Equity and Awareness Society (QC-IDEAS).

Both the nominees and the changes to the Constitution need to be approved by 2/3 of our members during the AGM. As such, we will be having the AGM next Friday, May 14th, right after the Departmental Seminar. Please attend the AGM, it will be very brief and you will be able to vote online during it. We need to have a quorum, otherwise, nothing that is voted can actually take place. We really appreciate your participation in the AGM.

Please read through the list of nominations for executive positions and supplementary paragraphs:

Outreach Coordinator - Viveka Kulkarni

Union Representative - Julie Jia

International Student Representative - Phung Nguyen

Third Floor Representative - Jessie Deng

Fourth Floor Representative - Josh Kofsky and Emily Steele (see below)

Fifth Floor Representative - Jordan Brown

Ishwar (VP Finance):

Hi Everyone! My name is Ishwar Singh and I would like to be your Vice-president (Finance). I completed my undergraduate degree at UofT and I am currently part of the Crudden lab working towards my PhD. During my undergrad I was actively involved in various groups, that helped organize fundraisers and events to integrate new graduates into the department. I believe my skills would help facilitate QGCS to enhance inclusivity and foster a holistic environment, while making fiscally responsible decisions. If I were to be elected, it would be as a first-time executive member. I really hope that my involvement could make your time at Queen's more memorable."

Hailey (VP Finance):

"I am a PhD candidate in the Ross lab and have been at Queen’s for almost 3 years. I would love the opportunity to meet more of the new graduate students in other labs through the QGCS. I was the fourth floor representative for the QGCS in 2019-2020 and got to meet lots of people. I liked my first position but I found that I was often unsure of my role and would love to have a more defined role of VP finance."

Josh (4th floor rep):

"Hi everyone! I am running to be the 4th floor representative because I want to help foster a more welcoming and inclusive community in the department. I love helping plan social and career development events and meeting new people virtually and in person (before the pandemic)! Since starting at Queen’s in 2016, I have been on the undergraduate student council and on the QGCS helping to build our chemistry community. If you see me in Chernoff or out around Kingston, please don’t hesitate to say hi!"

Emily (4th floor rep):

"My name is Emily Steele and I’m in my first year of my masters in the Stamplecoskie group! I did my undergrad at Queens in chemistry and really enjoyed the community and environment around Chernoff so I decided to stick around after graduating to enjoy more of the occasional free food in the fourth floor lounge (the joke is on me because that doesn’t happen anymore and now I’m in grad school). I loved being a part of the department student council for four years in undergrad and wanted to enjoy a similar experience in graduate school, while getting to enjoy a totally new Chernoff experience. This has been a strange year in school but I’m looking forward to getting more involved, meeting my fellow students and the return of Timbits before Friday seminars!"
